The Keer Lai Women’s Association
The Keer Lai Women’s Association is a grass roots charity based in the
Gambia. The KLWA provide self-help groups for over 100 women, where
they learn skills such as gardening (to grow food), soap making,
knitting, embroidery and batique.
The aim of the KLWA is to give women in poverty the skills they need
to be able to set up small scale businesses, so as they can be
self-sustainable, giving them the means to support themselves and
their families.
The KLWA also provide workshops in remote areas that teach women
about AIDS awareness, and general health education.
Marian Senghore founded the KLWA in 1995, and so far around 50 women
have been successfully set up in their own businesses, with many more
learning new skills that help bring in income to their families, along
with the innumerable amount of women who have received health
education.
Keer Lai Women’s Association’s future aims are to build a Skill
Centre, where women with no education will earn skills such as bakery,
cooking and sewing. Having these skills will help these women in
gaining employment, and in looking after their families.
